Thus, each project pays, on average, $293
Each project receives, on average, 94 submissions.
So, the average return by design submitted, is $3.11
If you submit work to 99designs, you’re not a designer. You’re an imbecile.
To whit. Let’s be insane and say that each design submitted takes one single hour. Which it won’t. It will take more than that. But let’s use that for the sake of argument. You’re working for people who think that your work is worth $3.11 an hour. Or, at a 40 hour week, that you should earn $124.68 a week.
Or, $5984 per annum (assuming a 48 week work year).
That’s who you’re working for: people who think you’re worth roughly 50% of what the average Australian pays in income tax.
Yes, yes, yes and more yes. So many young designers or “wannabe” designers are hurting the industry by submitting to these crowdsourcing sites. Not only is it demeaning to the design world it undermines the hard work that actually goes into a good design. Some businesses see sites like this and seeing people getting design work cheap then wonder why would they hire you for so much more money when they can get it done so cheaply.
I would like to point people to No Spec! a site designed specifically to educate and inform people why crowdsourcing or speculative work is bad for everyone. Don’t support sites like 99designs.
